The Connally Wedding

The Connally Ballroom is one of our most luxurious spaces for special events at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center. We had the honor of hosting the Riggins/Connally wedding reception at this space on May 25th, 2013. With 350 guests in attendance, everyone was thrilled to be celebrating the love shared between Emily and Mark, grandson to John B. Connally.

The bride, Emily, got ready for her wedding day in the Kate & John Jackson Suites, accompanied by her dearest friends and family that were part of her bridal party. After hair and makeup was complete, the family wedding photos were taken right outside on the beautiful patio.

Originally set to take place outside at their family home, the ceremony had to be moved the day before due to a huge storm blowing through Austin! Rosemary’s Catering, Westbank, and coordinator Linda Dryden, worked diligently to transform the Legends Room, the newest addition to the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center, into the perfect ceremony spot. Draping, back-drop, arches, & floral carts to welcome guests were added to make a picturesque memory. A unique L-shaped space, the Legends Room has windows that overlook the UT Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The room provides a tribute to the major donors and sponsors of the Texas Exes and is a consistent draw for those related to the University of Texas, such as the Connally family.

As the Connally wedding ceremony at the Legends Room concluded, guests began to arrive at the Connally Ballroom, where they were greeted with passed hors d'oeuvres and wine to begin the celebration. The Connally Wedding menu was designed with a focus on fun, celebratory, & easily accessible food for all guests. For starters, the passed hors d'oeuvres included Seared Ahi Tuna on Wonton with Asian Slaw and Cocktail Corndogs with Chipotle Ketchup. To follow, there were three deliciously unique, chef attended food stations – a Texas Tailgate station, a South of the Border station, and The Deep South Station. For dessert, guests got to choose from a variety of pies, parfaits, and cakes on a Sweet Temptations Display.

At the Texas Tailgate station, guests had their choice of Bleu Cheese & Bacon Beef or Cheddar & Beef sliders, accompanied with traditional sides. The South of the Border Station featured Poblano & Jack Cheese Quesadillas, Snapper Fish Tacos, and Torchy’s Style Queso. Last but not least, The Deep South Station let guests choose between a Large Spring Salad, Southern Fried Chicken Tenders, Southern Shrimp & Grits, and Gourmet Mac & Cheese.

Throughout the magical evening there were the memorable first dances to the music of Duck Soup and tear-jerking speeches before the night came to a close for the couple at midnight with a flower exit. We are so happy the bride and groom chose our team to host their wedding ceremony and reception, providing a memorable nights for all guests while filling everyone’s bellies with delights.


Information about the Connally Ballroom
The 5,600 square foot ballroom has 270 degrees of floor to ceiling windows awashed in natural light. This space is perfect for large gatherings of 420 seated or reception-style for 600+.  The majestic open skylight at the zenith of the ballroom allows for day-lit daytime meetings and dancing under the stars for evening weddings. Built-in projectors allow for presentations on hidden drop-down screens of corporate sponsorships or pictures of the celebrated couple.  

Two patio doors on the ballroom lead to a wrap-around terrace to the west with access to the natural amphitheater that overlooks the iconic Waller Creek. This is a picturesque backdrop for wedding ceremonies, and the Regents Bridge is one of the oldest bridges on the University of Texas campus. It also makes an ideal stretch for wedding guests to line-up for sparkler departures when the bride and groom make their final exit.
